Spotlight – Great NPO Resources

As my blog grows and takes shape I will be putting the spotlight on NPOs that I feel are making awesome use of Social Media and Volunteer Relations. I want to put the focus on Canadian organizations, but do come across some American non-profits that are perfect examples of how to use social media. No matter where they are from they all have the same goal.

The Application

I wanted to post an example of a really great volunteer application form that I found on the web. I feel the application is a very important part when it comes to volunteer relations. Knowing exactly why someone has chosen your organization is key to making them feel a part of your team. Not only that, but you also need to respect their time and skills.

 

Here is an example of a very useful application form

 

Keeping organized and thorough records regarding all your volunteers will make a big impact on your relations with them. They need to feel respected, understood and regarded as more than just an unpaid employee. Give them jobs that suit their existing skills, or offer to assist in developing new skills by trusting them to try something they have never done.

Trust is a huge factor in volunteer relations. You need to trust one another. They must trust that you appreciate their work and will not take advantage of them. In return, you will trust that the work your volunteers do will reach your expectations.

In Your Social Media Tool Box

Did you know that you can use social media as a research tool? Ever do a blog search? You have no idea how much information you can discover when you do a blog search.

A blog search is when you … well …. search blogs. Go to Google – type in a subject to search – take a look at the menu bar either on the left or top of the page – click on more – click on blog and voila! You now have a whole bunch of different blogs that may have info on whatever you are seeking. There will be some facts here or there, but doing a blog search is a really great way to see what exactly people are saying about an issue.

Imagine holding a very successful fundraising event where local celebs and business people were opening their wallets to donate to your cause. Everyone had a blast!

Did they???

Do a blog search a few days after and see! You may find that a few people who attended your event decided to write about their experience. You would even benefit from taking notice in who your local community bloggers are and sending them invites. You will really be surprised how many people in your area love to attend events and then blog about it.

Don’t be afraid to Facebook or tweet your supporters and ask them how they enjoyed your event. It not only allows you to get answers right away, but your supporters will appreciate being included. It can make a world of difference for your social media campaign when you interact with your followers.

Once you gather quotes from event attendees through your blog or social media search, you can then post these reviews on your website, do a write-up for your newsletter or simply repost what others are saying.

Onetime at the Office ……

…… I overheard someone say:

“Why do we need to utilize social media? Most of our clients are older.”

I was shocked. What do you mean why?? Because you NEED to get your message out there. You NEED to let the world know you exist.

Not only were we trying to achieve the task of lifting the assumption that the disease we were supporting was just an old person’s illness, but we were trying to educate our clients, their families, health professionals and simply the world in general on this specific cause.

What this person didn’t realize was that:

  • Adults who are 74 and older quadrupled their social networking presence since 2008, making them the fastest growing demographic.
  • Older users saw a huge increase in the use of social media. In December 2008, 9 percent of users 55 to 64-years old used social networks. In May 2010, that number jumped to 43 percent.
  • The use of social networking continues to rise among younger users. In December 2008, 67 percent of users between the ages of 18 to 33 used social networking sites. In May 2010, 83 percent used it.
  • The percentage of all adult Internet users who watch video online jumped 14 points in the past two years, from 52 percent in May 2008 to 66 percent in May 2010.

So tell me again why social media isn’t relevant when in regards to the older generation?

Volunteering and Why People Do it

Volunteering is defined as:

the act of selflessly giving your life to something you believe in, free of pay. Although if a person volunteers they may not earn money, it produces a feeling of self-worth and volunteers earn respect and Favors instead of money.

So is it really a selfless act? In the big picture of things, yes it is. But if you were to ask anyone why they volunteer most would give you an answer that uncovers a deeper reason.

If I were to take time away from my family and work to volunteer it would be for a few reasons. 1) I would hope to make contacts within the non-profit world. 2) volunteering looks great on a resume, and 3) I just want to get out and interact with adults. Why am I unafraid to admit this? Because these are the top reasons many people choose to volunteer other than the fact that people have been personally touched by a specific cause.

Back in the Spring I gave some of my free time to the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta. I made a connection over Facebook and from there noticed they needed help with their annual event, and I knew I was capable. I offered to approach some local businesses and ask for donations, send event info to different news outlets, and simply aid in promoting their fundraiser. Why? What made me want to do this when in reality I didn’t have a lot of free time? I feel sympathy towards their cause, and I was bored. Plain and simple. Selfish? Not really. But I did have motives.

Focusing in on motives like I had are exactly what non-profit organizations need to do in order to recruit volunteers. When targeting students for example, remind them how great volunteering looks on a college application or resume. Or how they can log volunteer hours with your organization for their work experience requirements. There are many different angles you can use.

Volunteering is a great way to meet girls! Hey, why not?

Whatever works.

Look at recruiting volunteers for your next event like developing a marketing plan. Put your prospective volunteers into groups : students, stay at home Moms, seniors, past volunteers and even donors. Why have specific donors donated to your cause? Because they have been personally touched by it. So approach them in that manner. Why did someone volunteer at last year’s event? Remind them why.

To sum things up, recruiting volunteers is not as hard as it looks. If you can figure out what tugs at a person’s heart or what drives them to want to do good you can use that to your advantage. Whether volunteering is selfish or not doesn’t really matter. If people are uniting within their community to help make a change the motives behind it all seize to exist.

My Mission

I love to write. I believe in social media. And I am passionate about working in non-profit. This is why I am here.

I was very much involved in the arts before getting my foot into non-profit. Although, when you really look at the organizational structure, the arts are in the same complex world as non-profit. The only difference is one raises money for a cause and the other for the freedom to express. They both require financial assistance from the Government and donors, rely heavily on volunteers and the hard work of employees, and most of all committed supporters.

From the bottom of my heart, I believe that social media can bring any non-profit organization to a higher level. For one, it’s free. Two, it connects you to people all across the globe. And three, it makes you relevant.  In today’s society being relevant or “trending” can make or break the work you do. You cannot afford to let your cause fall through the internet cracks.

Within this blog I am going to explore the need for social media in the non-profit world, and unveil the importance for great volunteer relations. As said above, they are a major part in keeping an organization a float. Also, I will be documenting my journey in assisting organizations with these aspects.
